Ice Climbing
The focus of ice climbing in New Zealand, in terms of short technical routes, as opposed to alpine routes, is Central Otago, notably Wye Creek and the Remarkables, near Queenstown.
In the North Island, Mt Ruapehu has a good range of ice climbing opportunities, although conditions vary considerably from year to year.
In the South Island, other regions include the Ben Ohau Range, Mt Aspiring and the Darran Mountains.
