Whangaehu Hut - East Side, Mt Ruapehu
HUT NOW OPEN AGAIN!
Whangaehu Hut is ready for business again - a massive effort from our volunteer team over Auckland anniversary and Waitangi weekends has polished off most of the major work. So get up the hill and enjoy Whangaehu like you've never seeen her before - basically brand spanking new, inside and out!
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED!
A number of smaller jobs still remain to be done at this hut, so if you're keen and able to help with some minor building/carpentry work, get in touch with Richard Knott as per the details below.
This mountaineers hut is located high up beside the Whangaehu valley on the slopes on the active volcano Mt Ruapehu. It is a great location for climbing, ski touring and generally exploring this remote area of the Tongariro National Park.
At 2080m, above the Whangaehu River, east side of Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park.
6 bunks, water tank, some utensils.
Off Desert Rd to Tukino Skifield, then 1.5hrs on poled/cairned route from road end, 15m marker pole close to the hut.Hut is not locked. If you have a 4WD and want access through the locked gate. There is a $20 key deposit.
Fees are payable to the NZAC National Office, PO Box 786, Christchurch 8140.
