South of the Darrans, Fiordland extends in a huge and remote wilderness. Both access and travel are often difficult, although the peaks, while steep, rarely exceed 1800m. In the vicinity of the Milford Track are Mt Elliot (2070m), Mt Balloon (1890m) and Castle Mount (2131m). Further south are the Franklin, Stuart, Murchison and Kepler mountains.
