Annual Climbing Camps
Climbing camps and meets to bring climbers together in the mountains have long been a focal point of Club activity. Climbing camps are an opportunity for climbers to get together to climb mountains, socialise, explore and enjoy the great outdoors. Non climbing family members are welcome at the camp and members of overseas alpine clubs are especially welcome to attend.
The N.Z.A.C 2011 Climbing Camp will be based at the Broken River Skiclub in the Craigieburn range from Sunday 2nd January to Sunday 9th
January.The camp is being hosted by the Canterbury/Westland section of the
N.Z.A.C.
Broken River will provide an ideal base and offer opportunities
to all levels/ages of Climbers,Trampers,Rockclimbers and
Mountainbikers.
If Travelling from Christchurch it is approx 1 hr 45 min
drive to the skifield carpark by 2wd vehicle and only 20 minute walk to the
lodges.You will be required to carry a pack to the lodges with the rest of your
equipment being shuttled by 4wd .
The lodges will be available to all and can
hold up to 80 people and for those who prefer to tent there is a public area
with toilet,shelter and water 10 mins drive back down the bottom of the access
road.![]()
We plan to have an opening night bar b que on the evening of the
2nd with quest speakers and slide shows arranged.There will also be plenty of
entertainment available during the week for those who stay on the hill and those
with children but we will be encouraging all who attend to get away from the
field for half,day and multi day adventures while the weather is
favorible.
CLIMBING.
TRAMPING.
In the
Craigieburn and Torlesse range as well as Arthurs Pass there is ample
opportunity for half,day and multi day
tramps.Cass-Lagoon,Casey-Binser,Minga-Deception and Edwards-Otehake are all
popular trips as well as dozens of other opportunities to cater for all
abilitieS.
ROCKCLIMBING.
Castle hill Basin offers
World Class Bouldering as well as Rockclimbing a mere 10 mins drive from Broken
River.Multi-Pitch mountaineering routes also exist on Temple buttress,Speight
buttress and the Otira face of Mt Rolleston and are all 30 mins drive away to
start the approach walk.
MOUNTAINBIKING
Downhill and Off road trails are all very popular and easily accessed from Broken river with the Craigieburn forrest park offering challenges to all levels.

Organisation
The camp is being hosted by the Canterbury/ Westland section of the club with support from the National Headquarters.
Headquarters are taking registrations and are the first point of call for information.

o Non members: $75
o Overseas Climbing Club members: $55 (must produce evidence of membership)
o Late registration (after December 1): An additional $10 pp.
o 18 years and under: Free (must be accompanied by a parent of guardian)

Getting there
o Driving:
To reach Broken River Skifield drive approximately 1 hour 30 minutes west of Christchurch (115km) on State Highway 73, heading towards Arthurs Pass.
Approximately 7.5km past Castle Hill Village (third turn on the left) is the start of the 6km access road. (NB this is also the ‘tenting option' site). From here 2 WD will take you through native beech forest to the Hanamog carpark. It is then a scenic 20 walk to the Lodge. You will be expected to carry a pack, and your remaining equipment/supplies will be shuttled up by 4WD. There will be no public transport allowed past the car park (except those involved in the shuttle).
The last petrol station (if coming from Christchurch) is at Springfield, 50km away. If travelling from the West Coast the last petrol station is at Arthurs Pass, also 50km away. We recommend you "top up" at either of these on your way, and carry a full container of petrol with you.

Basecamp
o A Basecamp will be established at the Broken River Ski Field Lodges and these will function as an accommodation, information and social centre for the duration of the camp. .
o There will be a resident camp manager on site to provide assistance.
o There is optional tenting 10 mins back down the access road, with public toilet and a stream for water. We recommend you purify your drinking water.
o The Lodges will act as a base for day walks while others may head into the surrounding mountains for multi day adventures.
o There will be no instruction or guiding available, but the Camp organisers will endeavour to provide suitable climbing partners/ pair up people if necessary
o Once you have left the Lodge environs you will be responsible for your own safety. We recommend you travel with an EPIRB or Mountain Radio.
o The Camp will plan to finish by 12pm on Sunday 9th, giving you the opportunity to pack, tidy and travel.
Basecamp facilities

- There is a no-smoking policy at the Lodges.
You will need to bring with you...
- All personal tramping/ climbing/hiking/biking equipment
- All food and beverages (except for opening/closing night bbqs)
- Personal first aid and medication
- If you choose to camp- all tenting and cooking equipment.
On arrival and checking in and out
On arrival you are required to register with the camp manager at the designated area. You will then be allocated you bunk. Please inform the camp manager of the numbers in your party so you can all be put in the same bunk room.
Organisers will be operating a system of checking in and out of Basecamp. It is important to comply with the requirements of this system for your own safety and to avoid an unnecessary search!
The last cell phone coverage east is Springfield. There is coverage in Arthurs Pass Village.
If you are venturing away from the Basecamp area into the hills, it is equally important to sign in and out with a DOC office eg. Arthurs Pass or Hokitika.
Social events
O the first night of camp (Sunday 2nd) there will be a complimentary barbeque at 6pm. You will need to provide you own liquid refreshment. There will be guest speakers and a slide show, and the evening will provide an ideal opportunity to "meet and greet" fellow camp attendees and find climbing partners.
On the final night (Saturday 8th) there will be a complimentary farewell barbeque and party. One again, please bring your own liquid refreshments.
Rubbish
You are expected to transport all your rubbish out with you. Please bring adequate plastic bags to contain your rubbish.
Security
The Skifield "club gate" at Piano Bridge will be unlocked on the opening day from 10am til 4pm. Beyond this the gate will be kept locked and top secret key details will be provided closer to the camp!
Those tenting will be required to attend to their own security as this is a public camp ground.
First aid
o A camp first aid kit will be available for emergency use, but you are expected to bring your own basic supplies.
o Please advise the Camp Manager if you have medical skills and are willing to assist in an emergency.
o If you have a pre-existing medical condition or special dietary requirements please state on your registration form.
Keas
There are resident keas all year round at Broken River. Don't leave anything lying around and keep doors shut!
Accommodation before and after camp
There are numerous accommodation options in Christchurch. The Lonely Planet Guide, the AA Guidebook and Christchurch Yellow Pages are all good sources of information, as it the Information Centre (Isite).
NZAC Lodges
Arthurs Pass Lodge and Porter Lodge (Fox Glacier) are NZAC owned and camp participants are welcome to use them. You will be responsible for your own hut fees. Both are accessed by key-pad combinations- these can be got from the camp manager. < Maps, Books and Route Guides
There will be maps, books and route guides at Base Camp for you to reference.

Mountaineering
Mts Rolleston, Harper, Murchison and Franklin all offer numerous face and ridge routes of varying grades.
Traverses such as:
- Temple- Phipps
- Philistine to Rolleston
- Cassidy- Blimit-Aitken
...are all popular day long challenges
If venturing to the West Coast Mt Adams and Mt Alexander are obtainable two day objectives.
Tramping
There are dozens of day, half day or multiday tramping options in the area. Popular choices are:
- Cass- Lagoon Saddle
- Casey-Binser
- Minga- Deception
- Edwards- Otehake
The Craigeburn Range also offers fantastic ‘top traversing', as does the Torlesse Range to the east.
Bouldering/ Rockclimbing
Castle Hill Basin offers world class bouldering and sport climbing and is only 10 minutes drive from the skifield.
Ice Climbing
Participants may want to venture to the Fox and Franz Glaciers (3.5hrs) for some ice climbing. From the road end the glaciers can be reached in 45mins.
Mountain Biking
The Craigeburn Forest Park has a network of off-road and duel-purpose tracks from grade 3 to 4. Some recommended trails are:

- Craigeburn Valley Route (4)
- Broken River Skifield to Camp Saddle (3)
- Dracophyllum Flat Track (3)
Cave Stream
Cave Stream is a beautiful limestone cave system between Castle Hill and Broken River. It can be traversed in approximately 45 minutes. The water can be waist deep and quite strong at times. Don't forget a good torch and strong footwear.
