North Island Huts and Lodges
Pearched high on Whakapapa ski field (the largest in New Zealand), Ruapehu Hut receives heavy use during the winter months as a base for skiing, mountaineering and ice climbing.
Positioned on a broad ridge next to Tukino ski field, Tukino Lodge offers panoramic views in all directions. The eastern side of the Ruapehu is sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds; rock climbing, ice climbing and ski touring are all easily accessible from the lodge.
Whangaehu Hut sits atop a bluff above the Whangaehu valley, high on the east side of Mt Ruapehu. This small hut is an excellent high base for access to the summit peaks, as well as ski touring and ice climbing.
