Canterbury/Westland Sebastapol weekend

A party of 9 Canterbury/Westland section members visited Unwin last weekend to check out some of the latest routes recently put up by Murray Judge, Rob Conelly, Jane Morris et al. The weather couldn't have been kinder with the sun beating down, warming the rock and an enjoyable 2 days was had by all. Nick Harvey, who organised the trip, was pleased to have done some of the new route, but i think there might be some healthy debate on some of the grading attributed by the first accensionists!!!

3 Passes and a wedding

Well New Plymouth is a long way from Mt Cook so when I got an invite to a wedding there the opportunity was too good to pass by. The outside wedding was great followed by a Hermitage reception (Wow) and what’s more the new hubby wanted to head over Copeland Pass 2 days later, so what’s one to do.

You can't miss us now

Unwin has a brand new road sign. It stands out really well and is a welcome update from the old yellow AA sign.

"Artist in residence" ends

Dean Buchanan's time as 'artist in residence' has come to an end.  Dean has gone away from here "with many ideas for my painting from my climbs and scrambles, but also renewed vigour for my life". For those of you that had the pleasure of meeting Dean during his time here, his vigour for life and his larger than life presence, couldn't help but leave an impact. We wish Dean well with his painting and are sure that inspiration gained during his time here will result in some amazing works.

Dean is cracking on a pace

The "Unwin studio" of Dean Buchanan is looking fantastic. Dean has completed two entire works as well as a panel to hang at the lodge. All the visitors to the lodge are intrigued to see the art works taking shape. If you go away for too long the painting has changed considerably by the time you return.

It's all happening today.

The airforce are here and the remains of the De La Beche hut are being removed. There will be  about 12 loads in all and the Iroquois is transporting them to an area near the Tasman carpark where they are being loaded onto a truck. It seems that there is little salvagable from the old hut.
