The first Australia Section of the Club was came into being at the 1956 NZAC AGM:
"NZAC Alpine Journal excerpt: R.D. Dick moved that the Club Committee favourably consider the formation of a section of the club in Sydney, Australia. He stated that F.W. Newmarch had received a communication from a member of the club domiciled in Sydney, pointing out the advantages to be obtained through the formation of a section whose members could advise Australian climbers on conditions in this country and make available to them alpine literature and other information which would be of benefit to the climbers and to the New Zealand Alpine Club. The motion was seconded by Miss A.C. O'Rorke. R.W. Cawley and A.F. Shaw supported the motion which was CARRIED." The first Chairman was Colin K Putt.
The branch went on to have both a Northern and Southern section, but was disbanded at the 1986 AGM of the NZAC. The majority of the Australian members then electing to transfer over to New Zealand Sections.
