Southland Section

The Southland Section is an active section of over 80 members, based in the south of New Zealand. 

Section members consider their backyard to include Fiordland, Takitimu Mountains, Eyre Mountains, the Forbes Mountains (Mt Earnslaw) and the Hector Mountains (The Remarkables). Winter ski-touring is also to be had close to home.

Meetings
The Southland Section warmly welcomes members and others to their Section evenings.Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every second month in the Invercargill Library at 7:30pm. To cover room hire and supper a $3 door charge is requested. Non members are warmly invited to come along and join us.

Alistair's Darran Gnomes
Alistair's Darran Gnomes are a keen group of young and older Southland Section members who especially enjoy winter climbing in the Darran Mountains. Southland Section members wanting to join the ADG's, or to team up with someone to climb with
in the mountains should contact Alistair Walker +64 (0)3 418 3818.

Trans-alpine tramping
Fiordland in summer and the Takitimu Mountains in winter, offer more exciting trans-alpine tramping opportunities than you could poke a stick at. Contact resident Moir's Guide South editor, Robin McNeill +64 (0)3 214 4508 or 021516366.

YMCA Climbing Wall
The Section established the YMCA climbing wall. Section members are eligible for discounted fees of $3.00 per session. The section climbs at both the YMCA climbing wall and the Stadium Southland climbing wall.

Alpine & Cliff Rescue Team
Regular team training evenings and weekends are held throughout the year. Newcomers to the mountains and Southland, are welcome to attend. There are a few perks to be had from belonging to the A&CR Tream and it's all good fun.

The Section built Homer Hut in 1965 and in 2005-6 extensively refurbished it. They proudly take on the responsibility of looking after it. Only 2¼ hours from Invercargill, it provides a superb climbing base for summer alpine rock climbing, winter ice climbing and all year round mountaineering.
