ORC Grant – Erceg Hut Painting and Maintenance Project
A team of 5 volunteers, led by NZAC member Hayden Cox, has just completed a repaint and maintenance work project on Erceg Hut. This was achieved with the aid of Outdoor Recreational Consortium funding (applied through NZAC) and DOC Twizel support, via their arrangement with Dulux, for the paint.
The work included the painting of both the exterior and interior in Devil’s Backbone (red) for the roof and Whale Bay Quarter (white) for the exterior walls. Haast Double (cream) were applied to the interior walls.
They also undertook to replace, or repair any loose wall clouts and cladding and to replace most of the lead-heads on the roof. The hinges on the toilet door were also replaced, the water tank cleaned out and a new tap is at the hut for a later replacement by DOC on the water tank.
Inside, in addition to the painting, the group varnished the bunks and ladders, oiled the floor, gave the hut a good clean-out and fixed a new ‘welcome’ sign to the wall.
Congratulations to Hayden and fellow volunteers, Sam and Hamish Newton, Zachary Hynd and Andy Muir, for a job well done!
