Rock Three (Traditional Lead Climbing Course)
You MUST be a NZAC member to attend - no exceptions.
A course designed for those who have led on bolts outside (sport climbed) and wish to progress to traditional lead climbing (placing gear on lead).
You may also be a beginner trad climber or perhaps someone who hasn't done much lead climbing in recent times and are looking for a refresher from qualified instructors.
The Rock Three course is not suitable for beginners and at a minimum you must have lead climbed outside on bolts, know how to lead belay and abseil. The course will be a weekend course, based in Timaru, South Canterbury and the climbing will be at Spur Road. We plan to leave early Saturday morning from Christchurch and return Sunday evening from Timaru.
The course will cover the following only:
- Traditional lead climbing
- Traditional gear and its use
- Placing gear while on lead
- Construction of traditional anchors
- Transition at the anchor station
Equipment required as follows:
- Rock shoes
- Climbing helmet (not a bike or kayak helmet)
- Belay device and screw gate carabiner
- Prusik (one long, one medium, one short)
- 2 x additional screw gate carabiners
The Canterbury/Westland Section will provide all ropes, slings, traditional gear and equipment required for lead climbing and has a very limited supply of helmets and spare screw gate carabiners but ideally if you are attending this course you should have most of the equipment required yourself - please ask if you are short of anything.
The course fee is $195 for the weekend and this will include petrol (we will be car pooling), one x nights accommodation in a cabin at a motor camp (provide your own sleeping bag and overnight gear), tea and coffee, equipment for the course plus two days quality instruction.
We will also book a table at a Thai restaurant for the Saturday evening meal (vegetarian options available), but this must be paid for yourself.
Once again - you MUST be a NZAC member to attend this course and as it is limited to 8 students maximum, proof of this will be needed upon your first enquiry.
Once you have enquired, a registration form will be sent out and this must be completed and emailed back within 10 days.
Payment will be required in full and cash only (receipt required) within 21 days of the course and is non-refundable if you withdraw without good reason or enough time to find a replacement for your spot.
Please contact Clayton to express your wish to join the course - there is no cut off day to join the course but we can't guarantee it will not be full before the New Year and as this will be the only course of its kind for the year, don't hesitate and miss out!
