CW Section - Snow 1 (Beginners Snowcraft) COURSE FULL
Snow 1 - COURSE FULL
(Backup weekend 15 & 16 July)
Sorry this July course is now full - limited spaces left on the August Course
Please note that for 2017, the C/W section will be running two (identical), beginners snow craft courses so unless full (maximum 12 students per course), you get to chooses which weekend suits you best.
This course is designed at those coming from a tramping background and with good moderate fitness as you will be expected to carry a pack uphill for between 4 and 6 hours each day so the course is not suitable for those with no tramping experience at all.
These courses DO NOT TEACH the use of ropes for crevasse rescue or glacier travel.
WHAT WILL BE TAUGHT:
- Balance and movement on snow.
- Ice axe and crampon use and the different techniques.
- Self arresting on snow.
- Basic snow shelter construction (time and snow conditions permitting).
- Basic weather patterns in N.Z.
- Safe terrain selection.
- Basic use of avalanche equipment (we recommend you attend one of the four beginners avalanche awareness courses being run by the section in 2017 as these are a fully comprehensive day course).
WHAT IS REQUIRED:
While this course is for current NZAC members only, you do not have to be a member when applying but once the registration form is sent back to you, you will have seven days to return the completed form and make payment of the course fee ($200), and be a current NZAC member (details will be required).
To be able to car pool with the group from Christchurch (NO EXCEPTIONS), no later than 5.15pm on the Friday evening of the course you choose (we will not accept individuals travelling on their own, in their own time to meet the group in Arthurs Pass as this is for health and safety reasons of winter driving conditions, and we also have 2 hours of lessons to teach on the Friday evening, starting at 7.30pm sharp at the NZAC house in Arthurs Pass).
An equipment check (a list will be sent out with the registration form), will be required for all students, well before the course date (an evening to be arranged once registered)
By registering for the course you must be available for the back up weekend as this not only acts as a reserve date in case of bad weather but will also act as a follow up walk to practice the skills taught, if the original date goes ahead so please read through the dates and think carefully before applying as there will be NO REFUND guaranteed unless by genuine reason and if we have time to find someone to take your spot on the course.Contact details: For full course details, a registration form and gear list, please contact Clayton on [email protected]
