Avalanche Awareness for Climbers &Trampers

Canterbury / Westland Section

PLEASE NOTE – This is not a weekend course, instead, you get to choose one of the two days above plus the 2 hour (COMPULSORY TO ATTEND) evening seminar on the Friday evening of the corresponding weekend.

This one evening and one day course outlines the basics of the avalanche phenomenon and sets people up for further learning and to be a safer member of a group travelling in winter terrain.

What will be Taught:

  • Avalanche equipment and its use.
  • Trip planning.
  • Terrain choice and navigation.
  • Small party rescue.

At a minimum, you MUST KNOW how to use an ice axe and crampons – NO EXCEPTIONS (please attend a beginners snow craft course first if you don’t have this skill).

When and Where:

Friday 21st July (evening seminar, doors open 6pm for a 6.15pm SHARP start, at NZAC HQ, Unit 6/6 Raycroft Street in Opawa), and Saturday 22nd or Sunday 23rd July (your choice of which day unless the course is full so some flexibility may be required), a full day in the field, 8.30am to 4.30pm at Mt Cheeseman Skifield (meeting at the car park before the 8.30am start time).

Course Cost:

(For current NZAC members only upon registering).

$100 will cover the evening seminar, day in the field at Mt Cheeseman, additional course paperwork, free use of avalanche kit (transceiver / shovel and probe).

Car pooling from Christchurch is encouraged and those wishing to do this can arrange with fellow students at the conclusion of the Friday evening seminar.
