CW Section - Ball Pass (2,121m)
This overnight trip will take in arguably the most famous mountain crossing in the country - Ball Pass. At 2,121m this high mountain pass crosses the magnificent Mt Cook Range with breathtaking views of Aoraki and other giants of the National Park.
The plan will be to leave Christchurch early Tuesday morning with a 6 hour walk/climb then high bivy. The following morning will involve 10 hours on our feet with an alpine start and time to enjoy sunrise on the pass before we head down into the valley with a return to Christchurch in the evening on Wednesday night.
The trip will involve rock scrambling, traversing snowfields and negotiating some exposed bluff sections. Confidence in handling an ice axe and using crampons is required.
