AU Section (VIC) - Mt Buller - West Ridge
Mt Buller - West Ridge
Trip Convenor: Andrew Mitchell
The West Ridge of Mt Buller is a great alpine day trip that is easily accessible from Melbourne. In winter conditions the terrain is part snowy bushwalk but there are sections that are perfect for practicing basic mountaineering skills. It looks and feels - if you squint a bit and use some imagination - like you could be on an actual mountain somewhere.
Notes
- The plan for this activity is to climb the West Ridge of Mt Buller to the skifield and then return via the same route.
- Height gain/loss via the standard route is ~700m and distance is ~10km
This is a snow climb requiring basic technical skills. Participants must at least have the following experience/skills:
- Off-track travel over uneven terrain
- Travelling in alpine environments above the snow line
- Travel in snow/icy terrain in steep terrain
- Scrambling on short steps of low grade rock
- Basic mountaineering skills (proficiency in using crampons and ice axe, ice axe self-belay, self arrest) to travel over low to moderately angled snow and/or ice
- Ability to travel over rough and uneven terrain with a day pack for up to 8 hours in one day
- Good navigational skills
