AK Section - Pinnacles Traverse Trip
Pinnacles Traverse Trip
Trip Coordinator: Brendan Wallace
From Delta Ridge Hut Whakapapa
Note: This is an advanced trip and will not be led or guided. Participants are responsible for their own safety and must have relevant climbing experience in order to join.
The Plan: Drive to Whakapapa Friday night and walk up to the hut. Discuss plan on Saturday morning and walk across the ski field to the Southern end of the Pinnacles and traverse to Grand Pinnacle before descending via grand gully and back to the hut.
Sunday will be a day of free climbing etc.
Getting there: Carpooling from Auckland
What to expect: You must be fully self sufficient and have experience using ice axe & crampons, avalanche transceiver use and transceiver search & rescue. You may be in Challenging avalanche terrain. You must have a high level of fitness as youâll be carrying a day pack uphill in variable snow conditions. There will be steep exposed sections on the route that demand previous experience and may require pitching.
Gear: Bring usual winter mountain clothing including two tools, crampons, helmet, avalanche kit, harness, food & water for a full days out. Pitching will require a rope and small rack (e.g. stakes, ice screws, rock gear).
Cost $40 for hut plus your share of fuel for carpooling
You must be a current NZAC club member and will be asked about your climbing experience before being accepted on the trip.
