The NZAC National Instruction Programme offers two courses that can give you the skills you need to get your skis into the backcountry.


Intro to Backcountry Skiing – South Island

Based at the iconic Olympus ski field is for strong intermediate (or better) skiers with excellent aerobic fitness wanting to get a good grounding in ski touring so they can go experience the winter backcountry by themselves.

Intro to Ski Touring – North Island

We are taking registrations of interest from strong intermediate (or better) skiers who would be interested in attending a North Island Intro to Ski Touring course.

Backcountry Ski Refresher 

Based at the new Glenmore Station Hut- Falcon’s Nest- is for members who are experienced skiers with high aerobic fitness but who want to refresh the core backcountry skills and regain confidence to safely ski in backcountry terrain by themselves.

Glacier Skiing Course

This course is for strong intermediate (or better) skiers ready to move on to glaciated terrain. Familiarity with basic ice axe and crampon use is required and can be learned on a winter section snowcraft course prior to the glacier skiing course.
