NZAC National Youth Climbing Camp – 2016 Participant Report
The North Otago Section NZAC sponsored 14 year old Jack McGeown to go on this year’s National Youth Climbing Camp at Takaka. Jack was generously donated climbing gear by Kay Schrader at Spelean NZ and Doug Carson at Singing Rock. The camp is aimed at taking promising young climbers out of the indoor climbing scene and introducing them to leading sport climbs on rock.
Jack reports: “On the NZAC NYCC about 25 of us (in NZ) got the wonderful opportunity to climb in Takaka. It was an amazing experience with some beautiful climbs which were very interesting to scale and were truly unforgettable. I personally found the 30 metre slab the best climb, it was a nice and relaxed climb about 30m high with small nice positive holds. We climbed up in places such as the Kosmic Krunch, Pohara, and Paynes Ford. This was also a great experience for me as a climber because I got to meet some amazing people and instructors who helped and guided me along the right path to becoming a better climber overall. I really enjoyed meeting the people there, as everyone was really nice and friendly and it was wonderful to meet some new people. Overall, I think this was an awesome camp and can hopefully attend next year!”
