Trip Report – Long Beach Rock Climbing Meet

Now in it’s 4th year, the weekend of 11th and 12th March was again a successful one, with 40 climbers of all ages and abilities from around the South Island attending.
Many chose to take the Friday off work to get an extra day’s climbing in Dunedin and although Sunday was a wash out (first time in the 4 years the meet has run), everyone really enjoyed climbing and socialising with old friends and new.
Climbs were done at the all trad crag of Mihiwaka, sport climbing at Mapoutahi and a mix of trad, sport and bouldering at Long Beach.
On the Saturday evening, we had a barbeque and social get together at the Long Beach Community Hall and an auction of climbing equipment (from the inspiration behind the climbing meet – the late Calum Hudson), and everyone got a bargain – and a piece of NZ climbing history!
Thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to Peter O’Neill and the Southland section who had 13 climbers attend.
As a result of everyone attending, after expenses, we raised $300 which was split 50/50 between the C/W and Southland sections to go towards their local crag maintenance and repairs.
Looking forward to 2018, for this weekend to continue there will need to be changes made as it has become increasingly hard to organise. Anyone attending in 2018 must return a completed registration form and pay the fee for the weekend no later than 5 day’s before the weekend – NO EXCEPTIONS.
