Trip Report: Mt Bounds
With a washout on the Rainbow Rd precluding any access for the Mt Una trip, a trip up Mt Bounds via the west ridge was decided upon instead. The vehicles were parked just short of the Boulder Stream junction, then we walked back to the start of the Wye Route. This is a relatively new DOC route which took us along a ridgeline, following a fenceline between the Boulder Stream and Station Creek Valleys. This route eventually took us into the headwaters of Station Cree, where further up an excellent campsite was found. With the recent warm weather and rain, there was very little snow on the tops, so crampons were left behind the next morning as we left camp at 4:30 and made our way up a spur to the ridge. Trudging up in the dark, wet mist, thoughts did stray to alternative locations including a warm living room couch watching a certain final being played, but these distractions were quickly dispelled.
It remained misty as we negotiated our way along the long, bumpy ridge with a couple of tricky sections requiring a sidle, generally to the northern side. By the time we scrambled up the last rock slabs to the summit trig at 9:30, the day was perfectly clear with just a hint of breeze and a blanket of cloud obscuring everything below, except for the surrounding peaks. We re-traced our way along the ridge dropping off down scree slopes to the saddle of the Wye Route, and back to camp. We partially followed the Wye Route back but the descended a prominent spur with a fenceline running down it to Boulder Stream and a 4km walk along the 4WD road to the vehicles.
Trip completed by Jerome Waldron, Ben Winnubst, Liz Roberts. Pete Wilkie, Frank Saxton and Liam Sullivan.
