Trip Report – Wanaka Rock Climbing Meet

On the 10 & 11th of December, an impressive troop of 20ish Southlanders descended over the crags west of Wanaka for a weekend of climbing.
With the long range weather forecast initially threatening the trip, the Central Otago weather changed for the best with two fine sunny days providing excellent climbing conditions. On the Saturday, our Southland climbers sprawled over various crags including Riverside, Little Big Wall, The Tombstone, Bakehouse and Farside. Some of our more experienced climber enjoyed climbing the old classics, while others new to climbing tested out their indoor skills on real rock.
Climbing continued until after 7pm as we enjoyed the perfect climbing conditions. On the Sunday, a team of climbers headed up to Kai Whaka Pai for some trad climbing. Apart from the odd piece of trad gear acting as missiles to those on the ground, fun was had by all.
Thank you to everyone who came along, especially those that helped our novice climbing members to learn new outdoor skills. It was great to see everyone band together to share their knowledge and skills on such a fine weekend.
