Late in 2021, veteran alpinist Peter Strang read aloud a selection of his poetry at an Otago Section NZAC meeting in Otepoti Dunedin.  Spanning more than 60 years of climbing in cold, remote places across Aotearoa and beyond, his poesm carry the quiet wisdom of someone who has spent a lifetime in the mountains. Pete, a humble pioneer of the climbing movement in Aotearoa, has long been a part of the community's oral and written storytelling traditions.

Mountain Dreaming is a book born from that moment. This collection captures not only the grandeur and challenge of alpine life, but also the deeply personal reflections that arise from decades of close attention to landscape, of alpine life, but also the deeply personal reflections that arise from decades of close attention to landscape, memory, and loss. Pete's poems range from playful to elegiac, always grounded in the specificity of place and the physicality of movement through it. It's a unique perspective on kiwi climbing culture-one that invites readers to pause, reflect, and perhaps see familiar ranges anew.
