Wānaka Crag Fest - Climbing Clinics

Learn something new or improve your climbing skills by joining one of our instructor-led climbing clinics. Regardless of whether you are a self-sufficient or supported climber, you can add any of the following climbing clinics to your festival ticket.

Friday 1pm – 4.30pm

Basecamp Adventures - Intro To Outdoor Climbing

For those wanting to make the transition from indoors to the outdoor climbing realm. 

Clinic topics:

  • Belaying with a variety of devices
  • Climbing techniques specific to outdoor rock
  • Climb some routes

Ratio 1:9 (minimum 6)

Cost: $50

Equipment: Harness, rock shoes, chalk (optional) and if you have them: climbing rope, helmet, belay device, otherwise these will be provided.

Anchor Building    

For climbers wanting a clinic on building anchors on bolts and linking trad placements.

Clinic topics: 

  • Safety for anchor building on lead or from top accessed crags
  • Different anchor setups for bolted anchors - top rope and top belays
  • Linking multi point anchors

 

Ratio 1:6 (minimum 4)

Cost: $70

Equipment: Harness, helmet, belay device, rock shoes, climbing rope, personal anchor system/lanyard, 120cm sling, 240cm sling, locking carabiners x4, snaplink carabiners x 2, whatever trad gear you have.

Rescue Skills

For intermediate to advanced climbers who want skills that will get them out of trouble on crag top belays or multi pitch routes. 

Clinic topics: 

  • Lowering a climber from guide mode
  • Assisting a second with a hauling system
  • Getting off a route with an injured climber

Ratio: 1:6 (minimum 4)

Cost: $70

Equipment: Harness, helmet, climbing rope, belay device - ATC Guide or similar with guide function, personal anchor system/lanyard, 120cm sewn sling, 240cm sewn sling, locking carabiners - 2 x ‘pear’ 3 x ‘D’, snaplink carabiners x 2, prusik loops x 2 - 1 long (from foot to chest), 1 short (from belly button to eyes).  

 

 

Saturday 9am – 3pm

Beginning To Lead

This clinic is aimed at climbers who are top roping outdoors and are keen to get on the sharp end of the rope. Participants will learn the ins and outs of leading sport routes safely and efficiently.

Clinic topics:

  • Setting up for the lead - rope, racking, tactics, communication
  • Belaying a lead climber
  • Leading a route - clipping, falling
  • Getting off - setting up to lower and abseil, cleaning anchors and draws

Ratio 1:6 (minimum 4)

Cost: $120

Equipment: Harness, helmet, belay device, rock shoes, climbing rope, quickdraws x 6, carabiners, chalk, personal anchor system/lanyard, sewn sling 120cm x 1, snaplink carabiners x 2, locking carabiners x 2, Prusik loop x 1.

Intro To Leading On Trad

For climbers leading on bolts and wanting to safely get into leading on traditional gear.

 Clinic Topics:

  • Setting up for the lead - rope, racking, tactics, communication
  • Leading a route - placing bomber trad gear, managing rope drag
  • Getting off - How to descend, cleaning trad gear on descent

            

Ratio 1:4 (minimum 3)

Cost: $150

Equipment: Harness, helmet, belay device, rock shoes, climbing rope, quickdraws x 6, carabiners, chalk, personal anchor system/lanyard, whatever trad gear - wires, cams -  you have or can borrow,  sewn sling 120cm x 1, snaplink carabiners x 2, locking carabiners x 3, Prusik loop x 1.

Multi-pitch Climbing

To learn techniques for safe and successful climbing in the multi pitch environment

Clinic topics:

  • Efficient rope management
  • Communication
  • Anchor building
  • Rope management at anchors
  • Managing changeovers
  • Route finding

Ratio: 1:4 (minimum 3)

Cost: $150

Equipment: Harness, helmet, belay device, rock shoes, climbing rope, quickdraws x 6 (5 x standard, 1 x extendable 60cm), chalk, personal anchor system/lanyard,  120cm sewn sling, 240cm sewn sling, locking carabiners x 5 - (2 x ‘pear’ 3 x ‘D’), snaplink carabiners x 2, prusik loops x 2 - 1 long (from foot to chest), 1 short (from belly button to eyes). 

 

 

 

Clinic Refund Policy

No refunds will be available should you cancel within 6 weeks of the clinic start. Any refunds outside of this are at the discretion of the NZAC Climbing Festival and will depend on whether a replacement can be found.

The NZAC wil try to minimize the impact of bad weather on clinics. At times the best option may be to relocate the clinic. If this is the case the instructor in charge will liaise with all course participants.

No refunds are due for leaving the clinic for medical or fitness reasons. Exceptional circumstances may be considered and are at the discretion of the NZAC.

NZAC reserves the right to cancel a clinic if minimum numbers are not reached. In this case a full refund will be provided.
