Matukituki Valley, Mt Aspiring National Park

Summary:

This historic stone hut, located in the spectacular Matukituki Valley, is a very popular location for families, tramping groups, tourists and of course climbers of all abilities. It provides shelter for those heading further into the mountains or is a weekend trip in itself.  The hut underwent extensive renovations during the summer of 2022/2023.

Location:

In the West Matukituki Valley on the banks of Cascade Stream, Mount Aspiring National Park. Detailed map below.

Facilities:

32 bunks (4 bunk rooms), wood fire, gas cookers (summer only), common room, a water tank and flush toilets. Hut warden in residence during summer.

Winter conditions apply at the hut from 1st May until Labour Weekend in October as follows:

This means:

  • Ranger will no longer be in residence.
  • Gas cookers have been removed.
  • The flush-toilet block will be locked.
  • Basic services comprising mattresses, tank water, wood-burner and a long-drop toilet will remain.

Access:

2 hours from Matukituki Valley road end over open river flats.

Fees:

  • Members $20 per night
  • Non-members $40 per night - book through DOC
  • Youth member(11-17 yrs) $10
  • Youth non-member (11-17yrs) $15 - book through DOC
  • All children (10 yrs and under) free

DOC tickets and backcountry passes are not usable as it is an NZAC hut not DOC.

NZAC membership can now be added to your DOC hut and campsite account. You can do this yourself online or if you require help, email proof of your valid NZAC membership to [email protected]. Once loaded onto your account, discounts will be applied at the time of the booking.

If you haven’t had your membership loaded onto your account and have paid full price, contact DOC 48 hrs later to receive a refund of the difference. The DOC office requires 48 hours for the bank to process the payment before they can refund it.

The NZAC office does not have access to the system and cannot provide refunds. Please call the Tititea/Mt Aspiring National Park Visitor Centre on 0272696871 directly.

Please read and complete the following notification form if you wish to utilise Aspiring Hut for a large group stay between 1 May to 31 October. When completed, please return to the DOC contact supplied on the form: Large group notification form - NZAC and DOC huts 

High Rainfall Action Plan:

DOC has put in place a Central Otago rainfall action plan (see here). Aspiring hut will be closed if the rain forecast exceeds trigger levels. This plan will be extended to include Cascade Hut.
