Black Diamond Solution Guide Harness Review
By James Gunn
On the tin
The Black Diamond Solution Guide is an all-round harness designed for performance and comfort across sport climbing, trad and alpine climbing and is well suited for both bigger walls and local cragging. The Guide is a variant of the Solution model with some meaningful details worth noting.
Testing context
My use of the harness so far has been with sport cragging: climbing and belaying in the usual hang-dog-fall fashion you’re probably familiar with.
First impressions
Out of the box, the harness has a noticeably slim, modern profile. Everything feels refined. It’s neither bulky nor flimsy. The modern materials are the right balance of slim, supple and firm. Aesthetically it's understated (black and grey with minimal fuss) which won't appeal to everyone.
Belay loop
The standout feature for me is the belay loop. A seamless Dyneema construction which Black Diamond calls the Infinity Loop. It eliminates the sewn join found on most harness belay loops, removing the typical wear point where the seam catches against the leg loop. Bright white against the darker body, it's also easy to identify, a subtle but important safety aspect. The design is sound on paper, but it's new enough that real-world longevity over years of use remains to be seen.
Comfort and fit
The wide waist belt and leg loops distribute load well, which matters when you're hanging on the rope repeatedly or resting mid-route. After multiple sessions of exactly that kind of use, the harness was still comfortable.
Weight
The Solution Guide isn't a lightweight option. It weighs 443g (size L), which puts it in the mid-range category. The lightest harnesses on the market sit around 260g, and even the standard Black Diamond Solution comes in at 334–366g. It's also heavier than the previous Solution Guide model at 394g. That said, the extra weight comes with a comfort gain and there's no noticeable penalty in flexibility. Compared to the Petzl Adjama at around 460g, the Solution Guide is slightly lighter, though both sit in the same class: fully adjustable, comfort-focused, and suitable for a wide range of objectives. If you're counting every gram, maybe look elsewhere.
Profile and feel
The overall profile is slim and modern. Joins and webbing sit flat with a clean, smooth 12mm finish on the straps. Previous harnesses in this class often felt padded or rigid. This one doesn't.
Gear loops
Four pressure-moulded, angled gear loops handle a full rack without fuss, each with the classic Black Diamond rubber clip. Four Ice Clipper slots (absent on the previous model) are a useful addition for extra gear or ice/alpine use. A fifth string loop at the rear is handy for extras, but it sits taut and can end up hidden behind a chalk bag. Fine for overflow gear, not for anything you want quick access to.
Performance comparisons
After two decades of wearing harnesses from most of the main brands, the Solution Guide has become my new favourite. The Guide is closest in class to the Petzl Adjama (my previous favourite), but wins out on feel: slightly lighter, slicker, and more refined overall.
Price
For a harness that covers sport, trad, and alpine/bigger wall use without compromise, the price is hard to argue with. There are very few (if any) comparable harnesses in its price band. Other premium brands have functionally comparable models but cost considerably more.
Verdict
The Solution Guide is a well-made and well-priced all-round harness. It's comfortable over long periods, handles crag use, racks gear efficiently, and has a clean modern feel. As an upper-mid weight harness it’s not the lightest option, but the comfort trade-off is worth it for most climbing contexts. Based on sport cragging use so far, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a capable all-rounder and doesn’t need it in hot-highlighter colours.
