NZAC Photocomp 2024 - Alpine Activity And Overall Winner
If you've been following this week you'll know that we have just one category and the overall winner left to announce. We finish with one of the highest calibre categories—Alpine Activity.
The category winner for this year, and the overall champion, is Ruari Macfarlane with his photo above. He captions it: Go-time. (climber: Sam Smoothy).
The judges' comments were: Ruari's dramatic photograph of a climber seconding a steep ice pitch high above the Mueller Valley encapsulates many of the qualities of a successful Alpine Activity photo. Natural and well balanced light and the subtle radial structure of the mountain's cliffs and crevasses draws the eye through a range of textures down to a distant valley floor, creating a sense of place, exposure and commitment. Scale and drama is conveyed through the climber alone in a vast environment, whose movement adds a peppering of tension to a powerful scene. Judge Mark Watson
Congratulations Ruari on this excellent shot! He has won a high-spec alpine shell jacket from The North Face's Summit Series range.
There were also five images awarded with Honours recognition, shown below. They win prizes from A Wild Life from Potton & Burton or a prize from Black Diamond. Congratulations also to Ben Mitchell, Eoin Queen, Maddy Whittaker, Mathew Denys, Michael Beckmann, Paul Wilson, and Rod Kirkwood who entered images awarded with Accepted recognition.
Thanks again to the photo competition judges Simon Waterhouse, Mark Watson and Dennis Radermacher.
